Roxy 2.2021
Ms. Roxy out with some of the handlers as they take care of daily chores. She gets a little extra time out so she can enjoy time with them. For those of you that do not know the story of how Roxy became a Jail Dog we will share it with you now Roxy's story began with the Jail Dog Program about 4-5 years ago. She was known as Miracle at the time but, little did we know what a wonderful one she would become to all the inmates she has worked with in her years of service at the Gwinnett County Detention Center. Miracle arrived after her owner died in her home from a heart attack. She was found home alone with the deceased owner by the owner’s older children days later. The family decided they could not care for her, so a kind person offered to take her in. Unfortunately, because the person fostered children for the state, they were not able to keep her for more than a few days. A loving neighbor of Miracle's original owner decided to take her in hoping to keep her from going to Animal Control and in hopes of possibly finding her a new home. Miracle was loved, taken to the vet, and cared for by this family, but Miracle did not do well with the existing dogs and cats in the house. After a few weeks and many tears, the neighbor sent an email to Sheriff Butch Conway explaining the plight of Miracle. Sheriff Conway immediately sent the Deputy in charge of the Gwinnett Jail Dogs Program to her home where Miracle was retrieved and taken into the program. To give Miracle a brand-new start they changed her name to Roxy and started her training. It was found that she was a quick learner and was always happy to see any person she met. Years have now passed, and this sweet girl is a big part of the program. Roxy has served her handlers well teaching them to be the wonderful trainers they have become. Roxy was recently diagnosed with untreatable cancer and is happily being spoiled rotten and well cared for by our veterinary staff as well as her handlers. She is a role model for the program and will be kept comfortable here in her home until the day she tells us she is ready to go... |

Training 12/2/2020
Here are some of the handlers during training. They are playing a simple game of "musical chairs" where they must be able to grab a seat and make their dogs also sit on command. If the handlers sit but the dog does not, they are eliminated. This teaches the handlers to be aware of where their dogs are at all times while having to navigate their way to a seat. They are teaching their dogs to focus on them while given the distractions of the other dogs and handlers. |
